Send me your request and e-mail address. I've considered making the Rabbit Ears out of aluminium as well (I have a CNC mill too), but that seems to negate the ease of building and the low cost of the devices. If it gets much fancier I think I'd just head down to the marina, spend the bucks and get some cleats for a sailboat. For my part, the wooden Rabbit Ears make a good student project (both for CNC knowledge and regular stagecraft) and each year we replace the ones that have gotten worn with new. Symbiotic, no? Depending on your use, (classroom -v- real life. Deck winch -v- overhead lifting) you might be able to talk one of the manufacturers out of one. Give me a shout privately and we can probably work something out. Bill S. That's why there are high speed chain motors. Open a trap on the grid, press the pickle, away we go. Works even better when the chain motor is on a beam trolley. They also make a clever winch and also a pully with a overspeed brake built into it. http://www.posilok.ca/. My church is looking at the posilok for their winches now. In the elevator industry these devices are referred to as governors if that helps. They initially activate a switch that breaks the safety circuit and kills power to the winch, then if the speed continues to increase they lock and the wire to the cage engages the guide rail wedges. I guess for stage winch use the "fall arrest" type of spring re-wound centrifugal brake devices would be more appropriate. Dunno what they're called despite installing them. :) -- Clive Mitchell http://www.bigclive.com ------------------------------ Message-ID: <1caebf780609301546p70b2a044t9db6d50fcfbd8d8d [at] mail.gmail.com> Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2006 18:46:08 -0400 From: "Jason Salvatori" Subject: Re: Air Pump...how to make a bird fly In-Reply-To: References: The hat we did with a squeeze bulb in the sleeve, attached to a rubber hose up the arm and in to the hat. The end of the hose ended in a pile of flour. Small squeeze = puff from the hat. Low tech, cheap, and works pretty well. For the bird, we just did a "freeze frame" of everyone around the table, a quick blackout, a flash of a leko with a cutout of a bird in front of it on the wall, then blackout again. The bird was bristol board cutout, hung on a string just below the grid with the wings affixed by rigid wire. (so you pull the string and the centre goes up and down, the wings stay fixed - voila! flapping bird) the ASM backstage pulled the string and the Leko was overhung in the grid to give a 1' shadow oon the wall between the actors around the table. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It WAS very low budget... Hope that helps.
